DENVER - Marian University women's volleyball (2-5, 0-0 NACC) earned their first wins of the season defeating Johnson & Wales in five sets and Lewis & Clark in four sets.
The Sabres opened the day against the host Wildcats and took the opening set. The Sabres led late 20-16 only to have the Wildcats rally to take a 21-20 lead. Marian was able to show some resilience closing out the set with a 5-1 run. Johnson & Wales was able to take the next two sets forcing the Sabres to take the fourth set.
The fourth set once again saw Johnson & Wales rally to take a late lead and had a match-point opportunity at 24-23. Marian found a way to rally scoring the next three points, two of which were kills by junior Erika Horstman, to force the fifth set. After a 7-6 Wildcat lead opened the winner-take-all set, Marian scored the next seven points to take a 13-7 advantage and cruise to the win.
Freshman Monica Dreifuerst and Horstman each paced the offense with 11 kills, while sophomore Hanah Walther had seven kills off of a .385 hitting percentage. Freshman Andrea Miller led the back row with 24 digs, while Dreifuerst added 19 as part of her fourth double-double of the season. Senior Amber Yahr also had a double-double in the win with 41 assists and 12 digs.
The second match saw Lewis & Clark take the opening set against the Sabres but Marian rebounded to take the next three for a four-set win. The second set saw Marian use a 12-4 run to cruise to a 25-17 win, while the third had a 10-2 run allow Marian to win 25-22.
The fourth set opened with a 12-12 draw before Marian pulled away with an 8-3 run and eventually scored four of the final five points to earn the win 25-20.
Marian had their best offensive performance of the year in the win hitting .211 with 56 kills led by Dreifuerst with a match-high 17 and Horstman chipping in 12. Freshman Ashley Stas and Walther each added seven with Stas hitting .429. Dreifuerst also paced the back row with 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the season with Miller adding 13. Senior Sara Komosa fell just one kill short of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs.
Marian will next host Beloit in their home opener Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. from Sadoff Gym.
