Women's Volleyball Drops Four-Setter to Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to host Lake Forest College, 3-1 (25-8, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15), at the Sports and Rec Center tonight, Oct. 10.

Anna Smit showed an impressive effort from her outside hitting position in what was an otherwise poor performance for the Blue and White. The freshman posted a .286 hitting percentage on 16 kills against just four errors. The Sabres hit just .059 for the match, while the Foresters compiled a .169 hitting percentage from the floor.

Lake Forest improved to 13-7 overall with the win, while the Sabres fell to 13-11 with the loss.

The first set saw the Foresters race out to a 14-3 lead before Marian was forced to call a timeout. The Sabres claimed a point on a Kathryn Braunling kill right out of the timeout, but Lake Forest responded with another huge run on the way to a 25-8 set win. The Foresters hit .238 in the set, while holding the Sabres to -.214.

The Sabres snapped out of its offensive funk in the second set with a .154 hitting percentage. Midway through the set, neither team could build more than a four-point lead before the Sabres stretched it to a 20-15 advantage thanks to an LFC ball handling error.

Smit and Katlin Jarvis then combined to close out the set with a 25-20 win.

With renewed enthusiasm after knotting the match at a set apiece, the Sabres jumped out to a 14-7 lead. However, five straight points, including four consecutive kills by Molly McCloskey, had the Foresters back in it and forced the Sabres to take a timeout.

The Sabres were able to curb the run, but not for long. LFC would tie the set at 18-18 and eventually take the lead on Cori Cooper's kill to make it 20-19. They would finish the set on a 5-4 run, capped by a McCloskey kill to end it, 25-23.

That appeared to take the win out of the Marian sails as the Foresters cruised to an easy fourth-set victory, leading by as many as 21-9, before putting away the visitors, 25-15.

Katie Reimer finished with a double-double for the Sabres with 28 assists and 15 digs. Katrina Jansen added 17 digs in the loss. LFC put two players in double-digit kills with McCloskey leading the way with 17. Megan Trubich tallied 10, while Torie Pasiewicz dished out 42 assists and four Foresters added double-digit digs, led by Tia Rupnik's 21.

Marian will have a five-day break before jumping back into conference play with a home tilt against rival Lakeland College, Tuesday, Oct. 16. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
