Marian women's lacrosse splits final day out West

AURORA, Colo. - Marian University women's lacrosse (3-4, 2-2 MWLC) fell to Puget Sound 10-9 in double overtime before defeating Johnson & Wales 19-12 to close out their trip to Colorado.

Marian jumped out fast to start the game scoring the first three goals of the game in the first 5:45.  Each team closed out the half with a pair of goals to give the Sabres a 5-2 advantage heading into the break.  Senior Hailey Miller had a pair of goals with freshman Sally Moris and juniors Maggie Cusey and Lindsay Lewison each scoring once.

The Sabres extended their lead to 8-4 with three goals in a span of 2:56 before the Puget Sound comeback began.  The Loggers were able to score five goals in the final 17:39 with another Miller goal splitting up the run to force overtime.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime but with just 42 seconds remaining in the second extra period, the Loggers were able to secure the victory.

Puget Sound finished with a 28-23 advantage in shots with junior Molly Gross making 16 saves on the 26 shots on goal she faced.  The five-goal game from Miller paced the offense, while Moris finished with three points to go with four ground balls, six draw controls, and three caused turnovers.

Marian once again had a good start in the second game of the day taking a 10-2 lead that eventually went out to 12-5 at halftime.  The Wildcats scored four of the first five goals in the second half to cut the deficit back down to four.  The Sabres were able to bounce back, however, closing out the final 14:19 with a 5-2 run to close out the game at 19-12.

The Sabres outshot the Wildcats 41-27 for the game with Gross making nine saves on 21 shots.

Moris finished with 10 of the Marian goals, while Miller added seven goals and an assist.  Moris also added 10 draw controls and nine caused turnovers in the victory.

Marian returns home to take on Illinois Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 in MWLC action.
