FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's hockey (2-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) scored four goals on special teams to defeat No. 8 Adrian 6-3 in their NCHA opener.
The Bulldogs were able to open fast outshooting Marian 13-8 in the opening period. Adrian would score on the power play at the 3:08 mark and again at the 18:40 mark to take a 2-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Marian bounced back in the second period erasing that deficit. Sophomore Troy Ring opened the scoring for Marian when he received a centering pass and went top shelf for his first goal of the season, assists to freshman Ty Enns and junior Dylan Hutton, at the 8:01 mark. Sophomore Blaine Caton then lit the lamp for the first time this season with an assist from senior Conner Blank at 14:19 on the power play to tie the game.
The Sabres took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity to take their first lead of the game at the 3:44 mark but saw that lead erased by an Adrian power play at the 7:21 mark. Enns gave the Sabres the lead for good when he tipped in a pass from Hutton for his first-career goal just 1:46 later.
Another power play found the back of the net for the Sabres when sophomore Nathan Walker found the back of the net at the 14:26 mark, assists to Hutton and sophomore Salvatore Scalise. Sophomore Gianni Vitali iced the game with a short-handed empty-net goal at the 18:43 mark, assist to sophomore Parker Colley.
Adrian finished with a 33-26 advantage in shots, but senior Hunter Vorva (1-0-0) made 30 saves, 11 in the final period, in his first start this season. The Sabre power play finished the game scoring on three of their six chances.
Marian closes out their series with No. 8 Adrian tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. from Blue Line.
