FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian men's hockey (17-5-3, 15-4-1 NCHA) finished off a sweep of Aurora with a 4-0 final to close out the regular season with a 12-game win streak.
Nick Monfils won a draw that went directly to Gianni Mangone who put the puck past the Aurora goaltender's blocker to put Marian up 1-0 at 6:05 of the first period. The goal was Mangone's 10th on the season and came three seconds into a power play.
The second period saw Devin Stuermer reach a pair of career achievements with a goal and an assist. Stuermer lit the lamp at the 4:55 mark of the period with assists to Curtis Lewington and Derek Thorogood as he weaved through traffic in the slow for his 50th career goal. Then only 1:02 later Warren Carter lit the lamp on the power play with assists to fellow seniors Ben Morgan and Stuermer. The assist was Stuermer's 100th career point as MU outshot Aurora 18-8 in the period.
Derek Thorogood found the back of the net after getting a pass from behind the net at the 1:20 mark of the third period to pad the Marian lead. Hunter Stewart and Stuermer assisted the goal, which was Thorogood's ninth of the year.
Marian finished the game with a 41-27 shots advantage with Mike Baldwin posting his third shutout of the year stopping all 27 Aurora shots. The MU special teams played well holding Aurora scoreless on four power play chances, while the Sabres converted 2-4 of their extra-man chances. Stuermer led the MU offense with a team-high five shots.
Marian hosts the opening round of the Harris Cup Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and will play either Lake Forest or Concordia Wisconsin pending the result of the Foresters game against Lawrence.
