SUPERIOR, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (0-2, 0-0 NACC) trailed by only eight points at halftime but fell to No. 12 Saint John's (Minn.) 71-43 to close out the opening weekend of the season.
The Johnnies jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead but saw that advantage squandered by a 7-0 Marian run. The game remained tight with Marian taking their first lead of the game at 19-17 with 8:47 left in the half. From there, however, SJU went on a 10-0 spurt that gave them a 27-19 lead at the 5:08 mark. The Johnnies then expanded on their lead bringing the halftime tally to 34-26.
Saint John's (Minn.) would come out of the second half fast scoring the first nine points to extend their lead out to 43-26. This slow stretch proved to be the difference as Marian was unable to cut into their deficit falling by a 71-43 final.
Marian had a balanced offensive attack with 10 different scorers led by freshman Matt Hickey who produced eight points off the bench.
Marian remains on the road traveling to Holy Family Wednesday, Nov. 13 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
