FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (15-19, 11-7 NACC) run-ruled Lakeland twice to earn a crucial NACC sweep with final scores of 16-6 in eight innings and 12-2 in seven innings.
Marian wasted no time scoring in the opener of the series plating six runs in the first inning behind an RBI single from senior Jordan Walker, two-RBI double from senior Michael Pappas, two-run homer from sophomore Jake Arens and an RBI single from sophomore Nick Bastien. The Sabres continued to pad their lead with RBI hits from Bastien and Arens before a two-run homer from junior Matt Nordlund in the third put the Sabres ahead 11-0.
The Muskies would tally the next four runs of the game before the Sabres put up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Walker opened the scoring for the inning with a two-RBI single, which was followed by an RBI single from Nordlund to put Marian ahead 14-4.
Lakeland would hold off the mercy-rule in the seventh with a pair of runs but a single from junior Jake Falish along with an error on the play plated a pair to give Marian the 16-6 victory.
Junior Jordan Bock (4-3) tossed a complete game allowing four earned runs and striking out nine including his 100th career punch out.
Eight of the Marian starters recorded a hit with Falish leading the way with a 4-for-6 game with a run driven in. Walker, Nordlund, Arens and Bastien all drove in three runs and had multi-hit games. Walker closed out his line going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three driven in and a pair of walks.
The Sabre offense was consistent in the finale leading to a sweep. The Muskies opened the game with a run in the top of the first but the lead wouldn't last long as the Sabres immediately took the lead in the bottom half. Nordlund and Falish each drove in runs in the bottom of the first to give Marian a 2-1 lead but the hits just kept coming.
In the second inning, Walker and Nordlund each brought in runs and in the third inning, it was Bastien and senior Hunter Berry. Pappas and freshman Sean Meyer kept the hit parade going with a pair of runs driven in in the fourth. Freshman Ryan Ellingson managed to score on a wild pitch in the sixth to put the Sabres up 11-1 before a two-out Lakeland hit in the seventh prevented the mercy-rule for the time being. In the bottom half of the seventh, Nordlund was able to close out the game with an RBI single after the Sabres opened the inning with singles from Walker and Berry.
Freshman Garrett Martin (3-2) also tossed a complete game to earn the victory only allowing one earned run and striking out seven.
Seven of the Marian starters recorded hits in the victory with the top five hitters having multi-hit games. Berry, Walker and Nordlund each had three hits with Berry going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two driven in.
