Honorable Mention - Marian Athletics Opens Turf at Smith Field
After the additions of men's and women's lacrosse, an upgrade was needed at Smith Field and that upgrade came in September when Marian officially opened the new turf surface at Smith Field.
The new turf provided a consistent playing surface in all weather, which was immediately put to the test in the first game. The men's soccer program was given the honor of playing the first official game on the new turf taking on Lawrence Saturday, Sept. 21 for a 2 p.m. non-conference game. The day started out perfectly before the rain began to fall on Smith Field. With the new turf, however, this played a minimal factor in the 2-2 double-overtime tie against the Vikings. Freshman Chase Hayden was credited with the first goal on the new turf when he scored at the 20:47 mark off of a corner kick from Cade Klusendorf.
The women's soccer program would then post the first shutout on the brand new turf shortly after when the Sabres defeated Lakeland 6-0 Wednesday, October 9. Freshman Ashley Welk had a multi-goal game in the victory, while sophomore Kylie Lange made four saves in the first half. The Sabre women's soccer program would have another memorable first on the turf when they defeated Aurora 2-1 Saturday, October 26, the first win over the Spartans in program history.
The turf then welcomed in lacrosse for the first time Saturday, February 22 when the men's lacrosse program defeated Northland 21-2 in their season opener. Sophomore Colt Robertson had nine points in the victory with fellow sophomore Finn Maloney scoring the first lacrosse goal on the turf. Snow barricaded the field for the game and the temperature at the start was 33 degrees, the high for the day.
